DSL not stable troubleshooting and solution
If the ADSL/ DSL light is still blinking and can't be stable. It may be due to the signal weakness in the line or due to damage in the modem. If you are using the first time, then contact your ISP. Because the DSL stability depends on the signal strength of the line. It can vary with different connections depending on the distance, etc.If you are experiencing an unstable DSL, first try to power cycle the modem (restart the modem). It may help to recover from a crash, sudden failure in normal working or similar troubles.
Try with an alternate modem or use the modem in another line. To find whether the trouble is in the line or in the modem. If other modems work properly, the damage is in your modem and should replace it. Or if other modems also experience this trouble, the damage is in the line. So try to fix your DSL line troubles.
The DSL line will not be stable if there is an interference of noise in the line. Check for any noise in the dial tone (disturbance in tone, cracking sounds, etc...). If the line has noise, check the joints at the plug, sockets, jack, junction box, filters/splitters, etc. Prevent corrosion or any loose contacts in the joint. If still noise holds on, contact the ISP. Because only they can fix it if the noise is due to any fault at the distribution line.
Even the phone is working properly the DSL may not be steady. Because the modem requires more signal strength than a telephone (voice signal) requires. Signal attenuation, low SNR (Signal to noise ratio) value, etc., affects the DSL stability. If any Parallel telephone line has connected before the ADSL filter/splitter, it will reduce the DSL Signal Strength.
Also check the quality of filter, because the filters can easily be damaged due to lightning. Also, ensure the cables to modem and telephone are taken from the correct sockets, as indicated in the splitter. Make sure no voice call is active during the time of connection. If the voice signal is active and the filter has any damage, the DSL can't be steady. If trouble causes only at the time of the voice call, it may due to damage of the filter.
And if the DSL disconnection experiences during a prolonged use, it is due to the rebooting of the modem. Which can cause when the temperature of modem increases. This will solve itself after some time, as the modem cools down. If trouble still persists, contact your Internet Service Provider.
NO DSL connection | Broadband troubleshooting
As the modem detects a DSL line, it shows a response of dialling by blinking the DSL LED. In some modems even there is no DSL line, the DSL light starts to blink after a few seconds. Such modems show the DSL line response by the varying frequency of the LED flashing. If the DSL isn't responding. That is DSL light didn't show any such response after the normal time for dialling. The chance of trouble is due to fault or failure in line or modem.
Before any further step, try to power cycle your equipment. That is OFF and then ON again, it may fix the problem.
If not, check whether the line has a proper connection (check for any loose contact or improper plugging, etc..). Try connecting with an alternate modem or use modem in another line, which helps to find is the trouble is due to the modem or line. If other modems work properly on the line, the damage is in your modem and should replace it. Or if the other modem also experiences this trouble, the damage is in line, so try to fix your line troubles (Even if you find the trouble in the line, check your modem too. Line damages due to lightning may damage the modem also.).
Check the line using a tester or else try using a telephone (ensure the ring is working) to make sure the line is perfect. Because modem takes some time for responding to DSL. Checking by a telephone helps to determine the line connection is ok. Even the phone works modem may not work in the line. The filters/splitters in the line are easily affected by lightning. So check is there any device is damaged. If the ADSL filter/splitter has damaged or due to improper connections from filter output, etc. To find this try connecting line directly without a filter/splitter, to obtain a proper line at the DSL line of the modem.
Fixing the problems at line or modem can solve most of the DSL connectivity issues. If the trouble still persists, contact your ISP.
Landline problems troubleshooting and fixing
Landline connections can get damaged often due to many reasons. Actually, most of the landline problems are quite simple and very easy to fix ourself. This tutorial just briefs about some troubleshoot tactics that can be used in phone line repairing. As a first step, make sure that the connections at the phone and the cable jack have properly installed and there is no any loose contact on the joints.
Also check the telephone is working, by plugging to another line or try an alternate telephone on the line.
Lightning or other causes can damage the land phone or some related parts such as ADSL filters, splitters, etc.. If the trouble is related to telephone or the rest of devices replace it. Else, go to the next step.
To detect the presence of an active line check the jack point with a landline telephone tester or using a working telephone or a multimeter. If there is no presence of an active line, then better check directly the main junction box, which acts as a network interface. Check the main input line, from the cable. If it is not working properly, you have to contact the service provider. Because it may be due to faults in the distribution line or at the exchange, etc.. Only the service provider can fix such troubles. If the line is working, then the remaining can be handled yourself.
Check next joint from the junction box and follow each joint to ensure a proper line. Wherever you find a broken link, then repair between that spot and the last point which works properly. Check the joints and ensure it has proper insulation. Because improper insulation creates a short circuit between the lines. The electrical contacts at the joints may have disconnect due to corrosion or loose connections, etc. So proper electrical contact should be ensured at each stage. Replacing the wires can fix any problems related to wiring or by fixing some minute errors in arrangement and connection.
Ensure the filters or splitters are in good condition, as they get easily damaged due to lightning. Also, they have a short lifetime. Check the splitter input and output, a damaged filter open the output. If it has any damage, replace it or connect directly,
If your trouble relates to reasons mentioned above, fix it. And obtain a proper connection till to your final jack point. Also, make sure the wires are connected properly to the correct poles. Most problems related to your landline connection may have fixed now. If the problem still persists, contact your service provider.
